DP to pay for Cranes goals, Besigye, Lukwago wish Cranes success

Opposition Democratic Party (DP),has promised to give Shs500,000 for
every goal scored by Uganda Cranes players in the African Cup of
Nations tournament that kicks off at 7pm.

Party publicist Paul Kakande made the announcement at a press briefing
in Kampala.

Kakande said the move is to show solidarity with the national football
team which has been out of the tournament for 39 years.

Despite the good gesture, DP was quick to blame government for
failing to relay live the game to Ugandans.

“It is disturbing and a glaring sign of government incompetence that
the time when the country has returned to the AFCON tournament is when
the national broadcaster UBC has failed to relay the tournament to
Ugandans,” read the press statement in part.

Other prominent politicians have come out to support the Cranes on
their social media platforms include Kampala Lord Mayor Eriasa Lukwago
who wrote:

“You’re in our prayers boys. Hoist our flag high. Go go go Uganda Cranes,”
Former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye took to Twitter and
wrote: “We’re fully behind you @UgandaCranes as you go for Ghana. It’s

Ghanaian Captain Asamoah Gyan told the BBC they respect Uganda Cranes
despite the Black Stars having ‘big names’. “It is a good team and we shall play the game with this in mind,” Gyan said.
