Airtel cuts interconnection ties with UTL; move to disable 10 million callers

Airtel Uganda and Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL) have cut interconnection ties. A statement from Airtel Uganda indicates that there will not be interconnection between the two telecommunication companies – meaning that communication between the two companies’ subscribers will be cut.

The notice issued by Airtel Uganda management

“Airtel Uganda regrets to inform its customers that effective Friday 3rd February, 2017, our subscribers will not be able to make or receive calls from UTL,” reads part of the statement.

According to Airtel, the cut of interconnection ties was caused by the termination of the agreement between the two companies.

Airtel Uganda boasts of about 7.5 million subscribers while UTL has about two million customers. This means that about 10 million Ugandans will be affected by this development.
