The SpearTeam Kampala.
The SpearTeam can reliably reveal that Yoweri Museveni approves and is virtually behind the soaring power tariffs in the country. The ever increasing domestic power was further increased by 30% and these charges are set at US dollar rates.
This revealation was Made by the Chairperson of the Electricity Regulatory Authority board of management, Richard Apire while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources.
Apire was responding to a question from Hon. Alex Byarugaba MP for Isingiro South the Chairperson of the Committee in regard to several complaints from the public about a 30% increase in electricity tariffs.
Apire said ERA had made consultations with the Ministry of Energy which sought the permission of the President. “Our line ministry consulted the President over the increment and he accepted only if the electricity tariffs for manufacturers were protected from the decision,” Apire said.
MPs on the Committee questioned ERA about tariffs increasement in electricity tariffs yet Museveni had issued a directive not to do so while opening the 24th International Trade Show at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) showground in Lugogo last October where he promised to lower electricity tariffs from $11 cents to $5 cents.
The MPs expressed concern that the US dollar is being used as a core determinant of the tariff in an economy that operates locally and receives payments in Uganda shillings.
Hon. Ann Maria Nakabirwa the Kyankwanzi Woman MP added that locally generated electricity meant that most expenses are incurred in local currency which has nothing to do with the dollar.
“Uganda is one of the countries in the world with the highest cost of generation at 11 American cents, yet world over the average is 3 cents,” she added.
