Famed award-winning artist, Aliaune Damala Bouga alias AKON last night landed in Gambia on a mission to launch his “Akon Lighting Africa initiative” and Gambia youth empowerment projects
The Senegalese – American singer is today expected to meet President Adama Barrow then proceed to launch a solar energy project.
Akon’s mission through this initiative is to provide millions of African homes with solar electricity.
The musicians trek also targets promoting a youth empowerment project under the theme, “Role of young people in building a new Gambia.”’
These programs are championed by an initiative with fellow Senegalese Thione Niang – Founder of the Give1 Project and Samba Bathily of the Solektra Energy Group.
Akon Lighting Africa initiative aims ‘‘bringing clean energy to millions of households in Africa.’‘ It last year announced raising 1billion dollars to finance projects in Africa.
Akon told press that “Africa is in dire need of basic necessities like running water and electricity” He said his desire for luxury reduced when he noticed the poor development in Africa.
The initiative primarily targets rural communities that have no access to electricity. He also seeks to find ways to bring costs down to make power supply more affordable.
