President Museveni’s seeds of dictatorship must be germinating into other African countries. 2weeks ago Tanzania’s president copped his ways of compromising opposition leaders by employing them in his government. This week, days after arresting Dr Stella Nyanzi over a Facebook post, Zambia’s president Lungu has copped him.
Chilufya Tayali the leader of Zambia’s Economic and Equity Party (EEP), was Friday arrested by police for a Facebook post criticizing the arrest and treason charge slapped on main opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema for obstructing the motorcade of the countries President Lungu Edgar.
The post pinning the police chief read:
“KANGANJA IS JUST COVERING HIS INEFFICIENCY TO CHARGE HH WITH TREASON, OTHERWISE HE SHOULD BE AN ACCOMPLICE, WHERE WAS HIS POLICE TO CLEAR THE WAY LONG BEFORE. THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, BUT MAYBE KANGANJA PLANNED IT THAT WAY TO KILL THE PRESIDENT OR FRAME HH,”
Police arrested him hours after the post.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the statement “insinuated that Mr. Kanganja planned what transpired in Mongu to kill President Edgar Lungu”, state media ZNBC reported.
In the same country, main opposition party “United Party for National Development (UPND), leader Hakainde Hichilema was arrested and charged on Wednesday with treason for refusing to give way to the president’s motorcade at Mongu, 500 km from capital Lusaka.
Police on Tuesday fired tear gas into his residence and forcibly arrested him.
Treason charges against the two carry a death sentence according to Zambia laws.
